“Terrain Vague” – Hip-Hop, Flamenco and Contemporary
Dance -

This is a show that should not be missed. Käfig Company is one of the most prominent companies of
French hip-hop! The cultural diversity of France is in evidence in this show where flamenco dance forms blend not only with contemporary dance but also with circus art forms.

In January 2006 Terrain Vague (‘vacant lot’) was created in the Maison de la Danse of Lyon. This show
revisits a world dear to the choreographer – the circus. Hip-hop dancers and artists originating from theatre and circus share the stage.

Choreography is by Mourad Merzouki who experienced that dance could be a strong means of communication in difficult and extreme circumstances. Since 1996, Mourad Merzouki has not ceased revitalizing the language of hip-hop with a great choreographic, scenographic and aesthetic diversity.Kafiq Company which has toured all over the world has put up very entertaining shows wherever they have gone. Their rhythm gives impetus to a colored dance, a dreamlike and sensitive universe that wins the heart of the audience. The Käfig companyfound its artistic dimension within the fusion of styles. It combines a sense of humor with gravity and flavors its works with the hip hop
vocabulary as well as a spirit that is open to other choreographic and artistic languages.

3rd Dec 7:00 PM Mahmood Farooqui – Dastangoi Performance at Museum Theatre
Performers: Mahmood Farooqui & Dan Ayyar

The lost art of magical storytelling in Urdu, revived recently to great national and international acclaim. Popular in India since at least the eleventh century, the romance acquired immense prestige because of Emperor Akbar’s personal interest in the form. With its transmission into Urdu, the Dastan of Amir Hamzah came to acquire the mammoth, epic proportions that are peculiar to Indic story-telling. As well as being
performed they also came to be printed. Completed in 1905, the forty-six volumes of the Dastan-e-Amir Hamza were an extraordinary achievement: not only the crowning glory of the Urdu dastan tradition, but also surely the longest single romance cycle in the world literature.

6th Dec 6:00 PM Dhruba Ghosh and Ernest Rombout in “SHIV SHAKTHI”
At Kalakshetra, Koothambalam
Dhruba Ghosh : Sârangi, composition
Ernest Rombout : Alto Oboe
Rokus de Groot : Composition, concept
Râga’s Bhairav and Bhairavi; Shankara and Durga

“The very Lover (Shiva), impelled by a desire to enjoy himself, assumes a reverse position and becomes the Beloved (Shakti), occupying the same beautiful place.

”This verse from the opening of Amritânubhava by Jnâneshwar (13th c.) is inspiring this performance.Though Shiva and Shakti are associated with seeming polarities like consciousness and energy, meditation and dance, asceticism and eroticism, silence and the violence of cosmic dissolution, terror and seduction,“their duality remained undivided”, as Jnâneshwar has it. ShivaShakti’s endless play of delight, disguised as longing and union, is beautifully expressed in the image of Ardhanarishwara. At the same time the performance is an interplay between an Indian instrumentalist and a European one, virtuoso players of the sârangi and the alto oboe. The latter instrument is related to the nâgasvaram and the shehnai, and theformer to the lute and violin. Finally this ShivaShakti performance is an intertwining of Indian and European music traditions, the great arts of râga and tâla, and of polyphony and dialectic composition.
