Service Square presents to you the list of movies that are being played in the various theaters in and around Chennai in November last week.

This section is all about entertainment – dance, music, drama, concerts – transcending barriers of
language, form, genres or style. Any type of entertainment that has a stamp of class and grace
will be featured here. If you have information on entertainment activities in the city we request

The films which are part of the festival will be screened at AFM Auditorium from Mon 24th to Thu
27th August 2009, at 6.30 pm
Stories on Human Rights is an initiative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human
Rights and produced by ART for The World, NGO based in Geneva and Milan. It is the first large
film project bonding together artists and film makers in a single project on cinema.
The 22 film-directors involved were chosen both for their talent – one of them having won the
Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, another the Golden Bear in Berlin and yet another, a
Golden Globe etc – as well as for their commitment to social issues and their deep concern for
Human Rights.
Mon 24th August
Twenty-two internationally recognised filmmakers, artists and writers, have joined forces
to mark the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, by contributing to a
unique film project composed by twenty-two 3 minutes short-movies inspired by the six
themes of the Universal Declaration: culture, development, dignity and justice, environment,
gender and participation.

Medley of shorts on Human Rights
The film genre of ‘shorts’ on the theme of Human Rights is made by the top names in
contemporary art and cinema. For the film buff and the humanist, these are rare and important
movies, because they talk of relevant contemporary issues while they introduce us to the best
names in contemporary world culture.
Wed 26th August
Les Petits Soldats by François Margolin, 84min
After 14 years of civil war, Liberia is a devastated country, inhabited by child soldiers under no
one’s control. For the first time they tell their story and talk about the abductions, rapes and
pillages of which they were victims. They also tell of their children’s hopes.
Thurs 27th August
La Liste de Carla by Marcel Schupbach, 105min
At the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, one woman fights for justice and the
extradition of the last remaining war criminals on the run. Their names are Ratko Mladic, Radovan
Karadzic and Ante Gotovina, wartime leaders of Bosnian Serbs. Her name is Carla Del Ponte, the
Swiss-born, chain-smoking chief prosecutor.

The INDO CINE APPRECIATION FOUNDATION is presenting a JAHNU BARUA Retrospective (Films
by the Award-winning Assamese Director Jahnu Barua) from 24th to 27th August 2009 as per
the under-noted schedule.
Jahnu Barua is one of the most brilliant among the contemporary Indian filmmakers. He is closely
associated with Assamese Seventh Art. His films are marked by a humanistic vision. Jahnu
Barua`s films are critically acclaimed in India and abroad. However, they have hardly tasted
commercial success. Following are the movies that will be screened.

Madras Day/ Week is observed to celebrate the history, heritage, colour and uniqueness of this
city now called Chennai. (August 22 is observed as Madras Day).
As part of the weeklong events, documentaries on the city are screened. They focus on different
aspects of the city – its people and nooks, its civic issues and heritage. These films have been
made by amateur / trained people.
The documentaries will be screened at Alliance Française on August 23 from 3 p.m. onwards.
