DakshinaChitra with its vivid and authentic architecture, folk performing arts, lifestyles and crafts
comes alive once again with the traditional celebrations of Dusshera.
Dusshera festival at DakshinaChitra is a celebration of Karnataka’s tradition and culture.
The following events have been organized:
Somana kunita folk performers to perform on all the nine days. Somana kunita or the ‘Mask
dance’ is a celebratory form of spirit worship prevalent in south Karnataka region.
Display of golu in Sathanur house, Karnataka house with traditional welcome. Some of the dolls
displayed will be more than a century old and can be seen during this festival only.
Delicious Karnataka Cuisine in the restaurant Kanali Arusuvai Arasu
The Craftshop at DakshinaChitra will also present a special feature on Karnataka with an
exquisite range of sarees, exclusive collection of golu dolls for Dusshera. Lambani women are to
be present at DakshinaChitra during Dusshera celebrations to exhibit their crafts.

DakshinaChitra, the Heritage centre to promote the Cultural achievement of South India is
organizing two day Workshop for adults on 12th and 13th September 2009, on Pattachitra.
Pattachitra style of painting is one of the oldest and most popular art forms of Orissa.
The workshop will teach engraving on Palm leaves:
In Orissa the Palm Leaf illustrations are mainly of two types, simple engravings or illustrations in
pure line on palm leaf and engraving with colour fillings.
The workshop would illustrate both the techniques in Palm leaf engraving.
Resource Person: Shri Prakash Kumar Maharana belongs to a family of master craftsmen has
been practicing this art for more than 15 years. He is the recipient of the state award in the year
1997 and has participated in many handicrafts exhibitions conducted by the Development
commissioner.
Conveyance to and from DakshinaChitra, will be provided from MCF office,
Besant Nagar. The workshop fee is Rs. 750/- Inclusive of materials, transport and refreshments.

Exhibition- Through different eyes. “Vision of Chennai” – Photographs by Sara Lehberger, a
French Social worker and Ganesh Manivannan, a media professional – two minds grown up in two
different background, set out to experience the city in two different perspectives, through the eyes
of a foreigner discovering Chennai, and a native rediscovering his very own city!

Bertrand on Energy. It is about the unprecedented energy crisis faced by humanity to meet the

ocean waves, ocean currents, tides, heat of the earth (geothermal) etc. These are
different manifestations of kinetic energy available for mankind to exploit without coming into
conflict with nature and environment. This exhibition is about the need to invest on energy for the
