Kutralam, Thenmala Papanasam and Agashtya Falls

Kutralam is a popular tourist resort in Southern Tamilnadu known for its waterfalls, amidst
picturesque surroundings – and is a source of inspiration of many a literary work. Thousands visit
this town when the waterfalls are in season. With the onset of the monsoon across the country,
tourists are making a beeline for Kutralam waterfalls in Tamilnadu. Because of its medicinal
properties, these falls are also popularly called as the “Spa of the South.” Kutralam, located at an
elevation of about 550 feet on the southern arm of a deep bay in the Western Ghats attracts
tourists from all over the world. It is said that water at Kutralam has the capacity to cure
tonsillitis, blood pressure, cough, cold and other diseases. The water here passes over a lot of
medicinal herbs, and therefore has the capacity to cure a number of ailments.
Here is a suggested Tour Itinerary:
Day 01
Depart from Chennai Egmore20:50 by Train-No: 2661, Pothigai Exp. Overnight journey in train.
Day 02
Arrive at Tenkasi by 08:35 and transfer to Shristy Garden Resort in Cutralam (10Km) After break
fast get ready for bath in Falls of Cutralam, visit other falls nearby. Back to resort have Lunch and
free for leisure activity in the evening .Night stay at resort.
Day 03
After breakfast take a tour to Thenmala(40 Kms)Eco Tourism Centre. You can spend a whole day
inside. Thenmala is a small village at the foothills of Western Ghats and predominantly a forest
area. The famous Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary is part of Thenmala Ecotourism.
One Day Itinerary at Thenmala Eco Tourism Centre could be as follows:
9.30 a.m – Reach the Tourist Facilitation Center, TEPS Thenmala.
10.00 a.m. to 11.30 a.m – One hour Boating on the reservoir.
11.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m – Visit to the Adventure Zone
(Attractions – Elevated walkway, Nature trail, Lotus Pond, Adventure activities like River Crossing,
Rock Climbing and Rappelling, Mountain Biking etc.)
1.30 p.m. to 2.30 pm – Lunch at KTDC restaurant at the Culture Zone.
02.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m – At Deer Rehabilitation center
4.30p.m to 5.30pm – Visit to the Leisure Zone
(Attractions – Courts, Pathways, Plazas, Sculpture Garden, Board Walk)
5.30 p.m to 6.00 p.m – Butterfly Safari.
Guided trail for 20 tourists in one safari walk for 30 minutes.
7.00 p.m. to 7.30p.m – Musical dancing fountain
7.30 pm Departure
Day 04
After breakfast check out from the hotel Local Sight Seeing and later visit Papanasam and
Agashtya Falls and transfer to Tirunelveli Railway station by evening for onward return journey to
Chennai by Train No:2634, Kanayakumari Exp. at 1900Hrs.,
Day 05
Early Morning arrive at Chennai Egmore by 06:45Hrs Tour Cost – Rs.8500/- per couple
Inclusions

Exclusions
Any of the meals(The hotel has a good restaurant with all types of food on nominal cost. They
don’t have buffet meal arrangements) According to the order the hotel provides food.
Entry charges to any of the sightseeing places.
Tips, laundry, phone calls and other expenses.
Places of Interest:-
Nine Falls, Peraruvi (Main Falls) – It is right inside Courtallam Town. It is near Kutralanathar
Temple. It is supposed to be the biggest waterfall among the others and also is one of the falls
that is visited in the off-season (Nov.-Jan.).
Chitraruvi, (Small Falls) – It is just above the Main Falls. There are steps to reach Chitraruvi falls.
Here, boys and girls have a separate covered area for taking bath in the falls. A ticket is required.
Shenbagadevi Falls – (The place is filled with Senbhaga Trees) – This requires trekking, as it is
about one hour to reach the falls. It is one mile from the Main Falls. On the way the Main falls are
viewable.

Thenaruvi (Honey Falls) – The area is known for the honey – This is above Shenbaga Aruvi and is
supposed to be the origin. People cannot take a bath in the falls. There are many beehives here.
Aintharuvi (Five Falls) – You need to take a van or bus to reach the falls. It is quite far from the
Main Falls if you walk (3 miles). The waterfall is divided into five sections. There is the Swami
Ayyappa Temple and Vinayaka Temple near the waterfalls.
Pazhathotta Aruvi (Fruit Garden Falls or Orchid Falls).
Puli Aruvi (Tiger Falls) – It is quite far from the Main falls. Buses and various vehicles are available
to get there. The waterfall falls from stone-carved claws of the tiger.
Pazhaya Courtallam (Old Falls) – The Old Falls are not too popular, and are about 4 miles from the
Main Falls
Puthu Aruvi (New Falls) or Palaruvi (Milk Falls) – The falls look like white milk.
