Project Blossom

Project Blossom is a Rotary Project which aims at raising funds for reconstructive surgery for the
leprosy afflicted. Leprosy victims often have twisted and ‘clawed’ hands. A visible sign of the
disease, leading to social exclusion. Surgery on their hands helps them open their hands and do
things we take for granted – like holding a cup of tea. Project Blossom hopes to help their lives
blossom again as their hands open up like a flower in bloom. More than the physical aspects of the
disease, leprosy affected people suffer more from the psychological scars caused by social
ostracisation.

Leprosy – Statistics

Every two minutes someone in the world is told they have leprosy!
Leprosy is much more than a physical disease – it is a human rights issue leading to terrible social
exclusion and injustice
2007 – number of new cases detected was 254,525* Down from 763,000 new cases in 2001
India accounts for 54% new cases detected globally *WHO
